Awami League (AL) Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif yesterday described the BNP’s demand for caretaker government as ‘illogical’, reports BSS.
“Election Commission (EC) was able to hold several elections in a free, fair and peaceful manner under the present government, so the BNP’s demand for a caretaker government is not logical at all,” he said.
He was speaking as the chief guest while laying the foundation stones of Rahima-Afsar Academic building coinciding a reception programme to the people who raised the national flag for the first time at Kushtia Islamia College premises during the Liberation War.
Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim was present as the special guest at the function chaired by President of Kushtia Islamia College’s governing body Muhammad Shamsur Rahman Babu.
Hanif said people have to know the background of caretaker government movement in 1996 when BNP destroyed the election system by rigging votes.
“The countrymen were compelled to stage a movement for caretaker government, but now the EC is able to hold fair election,” he said.
The AL leader said the BNP’s recent activities have proved that it was a party of terrorists. They didn’t believe in democracy and they were heading towards a party of extremists and communalism,” he added.
Ihsanul Karim said the country’s independence, which was earned through the sacrifice of the lives of millions of people, is the greatest achievement of Bangalee nation.
“The history of our great Liberation War will have to be spread in generation after generation so that none can distort it,” he said.
Later, Hanif handed over crests to Ihsanul Karim, Advocate Abdul Jalil, Advocate Abdul Bari, Chowdhury Morshed Alam Modhu and Sheikh Gias Uddin Ahmed Mintu who raised the Bangladeshi flag for the first time on March 3, 1971, at the college under the initiative of Swadhin Bangla Chhatra Sangram Parishad.
Kushtia Police Super SM Mehedi Hasan, Zila Parisad Chairman Rabiul Islam, Kushtia Zila Awami League President Sadar Uddin Khan and its General Secretary Azgar Ali were, among others, present at the function.
