The government has imposed a ban from September 25 to October 9 on catching, selling and transporting hilsa in the coastal areas to ensure the safe spawning of this popular fish during its peak breeding period, reports UNB.
The decision came from a views-exchange meeting on hilsa catching and selling of Fisheries and Livestock at the Secretariat on Thursday.
The objective of the restriction is to save the mother hilsa which lays eggs during the period, Fisheries and Livestock Minister Md. Sayedul Haque told reporters after the meeting.
