The overall flood situation in the country’s north, and north-central areas are likely to improve, while the north-eastern region may see a slight deterioration in the next 24 hours as the Surma river has gone into spate following heavy rains upstream and in the area. But the situation will improve in the next three days, including that in the Sylhet, washed by the rain-fed river Surma as there are no immediate prospect of heavy rainfall in its up and downstream, Arifuzzaman Bhuiya, an official at the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre(FFWC) told The Independent yesterday. However, in a see-saw pattern, the Brahmaputra-Jamuna that recently wrecked havoc in the northern districts started falling. The Ganges-Padma at its downstream in north-central areas, however, started rising, flooding many areas from Rajbari to Faridpur, Shariatpur and Manikganj. As the Jamuna shrinks, the process that may continue in next 72 hours, the flood situation in most affected Sirajganj started improving, increasing erosion and water logging in the low lying areas and char lands, reported our staff correspondent from the district.
Our correspondent from Jamalpur said, with the steady retreat of the Brahmaputra, the flood situation in the district is gradually improving. DC Jamalpur, Shahabuddin Khan said, with the receding of the floods, the relief operations in the affected areas were going on under the supervision of the district administration. District relief and rehabilitation office sources said over 33 thousand people in Islampur, Dewanganj, Bakshiganj, Madanganj and Sharishabari upazilas have become affected by the floods. They have disbursed 74 tonnes of rice among the flood hit people in Dewanganj, Islampur, Bakshiganj and Sharishabari upazilas.
BSS adds: The displaced people started returning homes at most places following further improvement of flood situation in the Brahmaputra basin during the past 24 hours till 6am today, official said. Sources in the district administrations and Water Development Board (WDB) said the major rivers marked significant falls in their water levels following sharp reduction in the rate of onrushing water from the upstream and no rainfall during the period.
The improving trend will continue with further recession in water levels of the major rivers in Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Gaibandha, Bogra and Sirajganj districts in the Brahmaputra basin during the next 72 hours. However, the Brahmaputra was still flowing above its danger mark (DM) by 2cm at Fulchhari, Jamuna by 19cm at Bahadurabad, 44cm at Sariakandi and 58cm at Sirajganj points at 6am today.
Besides, the Kartoa was flowing above the DM by 34cm at Chalk Rahimapur and 34cm at Kanthakhali points and Atrai was flowing 151cm above its DM at Baghabari point at 6am today.
According WDB sources, all other rivers also marked significant falls during the past 24 hours and were flowing well below their respective DM in the upper Brahmaputra basin.
The Dharla was flowing below its DM by 5cm at Kurigram, Teesta by 10cm at Dalia and 139cm at Kawnia and Jamuneswari below its DM by 70cm at Badarganj points.
