Dinesh Chandimal, the stand-in captain of Sri Lanka, said on Friday that they seek to triumph the final of the tri-nation series by applying the same strategy what they did in the last matches against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh.
Their strategy was simple, under which they will evolve throughout the tournament match by match. Despite morale-breaking defeat in the initial two matches of the tournament, they’ve reached the final to implement the basic of the strategy in the ground.
‘‘It’s a really good win as a team especially before the final. But we didn’t think about the final. As I said in last press conference, we are just playing one at a time,’’ said Dinesh Chandimal.
‘‘We’ll have a process to do that. We have to do our basics and stick to the plans. If we can execute that, we’re in the game,’’ Chandimal told media at his pre-final day press conference.
The wicketkeeper-batsman admitted the hard times of the team, stating that they will focus more on their games, not much to the good result so that they could be staged their rejuvenation with the help of the new coach.
‘‘Actually, it’s a hard time for the team and the Sri Lankan fans over the past two years especially in the one-day format, as you said. But when you’re looking at the one-day format we also had some injury issues,’’ the 28-year-old Chandimal said.
‘‘Sometimes we couldn’t get the right combination to the game. But that’s not an excuse. As players you need to perform well wherever you’re playing. Now, with the new coach, we’ve got some new strategies. We’ve got a lot of faith in him, and we’ve got some confidence,’’ he also said.
‘‘We’re not thinking about the result. We’re always thinking about how to play good cricket when we’re in the middle. That’s the main change we have in the team,’’ he added.
The experienced batsman, who played 44 Tests along with 138 ODIs and 48 T20Is for the Islanders, thinks that a team always needs a good coach along with good players to get good result.
He also said that they will get a good result from the final if they could execute their game plan in the middle.
