Int'l confce on Bengal Studies begins at JU
SAVAR: A four-day international conference on Bengal Studies began at Jahangirnagar University campus on Thursday morning.
JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam inaugurated the conference at Zahir Raihan auditorium around 10:20am. A total of 250 papers on different disciplines of Bengal Studies will be presented in the four-day event. Some 170 researchers from 20 countries will present their papers at the conference.
International Society of Bengal Studies (ISBS), a platform of Bengal Studies professionals for undertaking initiatives for the continuity of interaction between Bengal Studies scholars through organising International Conference, has arranged the conference at New Arts Building of the campus.
Moreover, a cultural function will be held on January 28, on the last day of conference, at Selim Al Deen Muktamancho.
Pro-AL panel sweeps in RUETTA poll
The ruling party Awami League-backed teachers’ panel retained most of the posts in the election of the executive council of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology Teachers’ Association (RUETTA).
Out of eleven posts, the AL-backed panel ‘Bangabandhur Adarsa O Muktijuddher Cetonay Biswashi Panel’ won seven posts, while the BNP-backed panel ‘Muktijuddher Chetonay Biswashi Panel’ won three posts including the post of president.
RUETTA chief election commissioner Professor Shamsul Alam declared the result of the election on Wednesday afternoon. A total of 195 teachers cast their votes.
Prof SM Abdur Razzak, dean of RUET Electrical and Computer Engineering faculty, was elected president from the BNP-backed panel while Prof Shamimur Rahman, dean of Mechanical Engineering faculty, were elected as general secretary as an independent candidate.
Five office-bearers are Prof Kamruzzaman Sarkar of Civil Engineering department as vice-president, Prof Rabiul Awal of Civil Engineering department as join secretary, Prof Firoz Mahmud of Computer Science and Engineering department as sports affairs secretary and Prof Joglul Sadat of Civil Engineering department as treasurer while Prof Ajoy Kirsna of Electrical and Electronic Engineering department, associate prof Kamrul Islam of Mathematics department and lecturer Ali Hossain were elected from the AL-backed panel as executive members.
Lords holds annual sports competition today
Lords, an English medium school, will organise its annual sports competition at Banani SWAT Field (Block E, Road 13/A) in the capital today, says a press release.
Md Manjurul Islam, former national cricket player and cricket development coach (ACC and ICC), will be the chief guest while Taskin Ahmed, national cricket player, will be the special guest at the inaugural ceremony of the event that will start at 9am and continue until 3:30pm.
The institute is organising the contest as part of its vision to provide quality education with lots of amusement and fun.
