The ruling Awami League-backed panel of lawyers won a landslide victory in the Bangladesh Bar Council election over a panel of BNP-Jamaat-backed lawyers, unofficial results suggest. According to unofficial results, the AL-backed Sammilita Ainjibi Samannoy Parishad (SASP) was leading by 10 out of a total of 14 seats in the election to the Bar Council, the regulatory body for lawyers. The BNP-backed Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikya Parishad (JAOP) secured four posts in the election.
According to the results, wining candidates from the SASP are Amirul Islam, Abdul Baset Majumder, Abdul Matin Khasru, ZI Khan Panna, Kazi M Nazibulah Hiru, HR Zahid Anwar, M Ibrahim Hossain Chowdhury, Parvez Alam Khan, M Yahiya, and M Rezaul Karim.
Wining candidates from the JAOP are Khandker Mahbub Hossain, AJ Mohammad Ali, AM Mahbubuddin Khokan, and Kaimul Huq. An executive body, which will be formed combining 14 newly elected member, will elect the vice-chairman of the Bar Council in its first meeting. The newly elected members will take the office for the next three years. Abdul Baset Mazumder and M Amirul Islam are said to be the hot-favourites for the vice-chairman post. According to the existing provision, the attorney general is the ex-officio chairman of the council.
