Increase in supply reduces onion prices in capital

Prices of local and imported onions have fallen by about Tk 20 per kg in the capital's kitchen markets.

In the middle of this month, prices of some vegetables suddenly increased, but now they are down slightly. However, prices of winter vegetables are still high.

Traders said the supply of new local onions is adequate. The Indian onions too are there. And owing to the increase in supply, prices have fallen.

The new local onion is being sold at Tk 50- 55 per kg, down from Tk 60-70 last week. The imported onion is now Tk 55-60 per kg, which was Tk 60-70 last week.

Traders said the new local onion is being sold at Tk 230-250 and the Indian variety Tk 250-280 per palla.

Old local onions are not available in many markets. A trader at Karwan Bazar said there is little stock of old local onions in the market that were bought earlier.

Prices of winter vegetables shot up in the middle of the month and it continued for two more weeks.  Small pieces of cauliflower are being sold at Tk 30-35 and larger ones Tk 45-50. But there is no shortage of vegetables in the market. Tomato, beans, gourd, pumpkin, cauliflower, cabbage, turnip, radish, read amaranth all are available in plenty.

Prices of turnip, radish, tomato and eggplant have fallen. Turnip, sold at Tk 30-35, is now Tk 20-25; the price of eggplant has dropped to Tk 30-40 from Tk 60 last week; radish Tk 15-20 from Tk 25; tomato is steady at Tk 50-60. Last week, the price of gourd was Tk 40; it is now Tk 50. Red spinach is being sold for Tk 10, the same as last week.

In the beginning of the month, traders attributed the price rise to interrupted supplies due to the cold weather and fog. They said transporting of vegetables was extremely difficult under these conditions.

Buyers said as there is no shortage of vegetables, prices should have been lower.
