RAJON MURDER

KSA to send back prime accused Kamrul

HUMAYUN KABIR BHUIYAN

Kamrul Islam, the prime accused in a case filed over the murder of 13-year old Samiul Islam Rajon, will be sent back to Bangladesh from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in four weeks to face trial, according to government sources concerned. The Saudi interior ministry has recently approved the extradition of Kamrul to Bangladesh, the sources said. Kamrul fled to Saudi Arabia soon after the murder of Rajon on July 8 in Kumargaon Bus Stand area of Sylhet sadar upazila. He was spotted by some expatriate Bangladeshis in Jeddah on July 13.
They caught and handed him over to the Bangladesh consulate in Jeddah from where Saudi Police took him into their custody. Since then, Bangladesh has been making diplomatic efforts to get Kamrul extradited to face the trial. “The Saudi interior ministry has given approval to send Kamrul Islam back to Bangladesh to face the trial of the case filed in connection with the murder of Rajon,” a senior government official familiar with the issue told The Independent on Wednesday. “They (Saudi interior ministry) informed our ambassador couple of days ago that Kamrul will be sent back to Bangladesh within four weeks,” he said. According to the sources, the Saudi authorities have always been positive to Bangladesh’s request to send him back. About the reasons behind the delay, the sources mentioned three aspects – absence of extradition treaty between Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia, lack of precedence of such instance and bureaucratic complexities of Saudi Arabia. The government has always been active in this regard and raised the issue at different levels to expedite the matter and the Saudis, including their foreign ministry, have always responded favourably, they said.
Bangladesh made the request through the Saudi foreign ministry that forwarded it to the interior ministry, said the sources. The government has provided the Saudi authorities all the documents they asked for, including the case history and Interpol arrest warrant, they said. Nothing, however, has yet been finalised, they added.
Teenager Rajon was beaten to death allegedly by Kamrul and several others on the ground that he tried to steal a van. One of accused filmed the murder incident on a mobile phone and shared it on the social media, shaking the entire country. On August 16, police pressed charges against 13 people, including Kamrul, for their involvement in the killing. Of the accused, 10 have been arrested while the rest,
including Kamrul, have been on the run.
