Woman ‘killed’ for dowry

A housewife was found dead at Kanuhorpur village in Jhenidah sadar upazila on Wednesday night. The deceased was Juthi Begum, 23, wife of Rubel Mia of Kanuhorpur village and daughter of Arshed Ali of Betai village in sadar upazila. Shimul Hossain, brother of the victim, alleged Rubel and his mother first killed Juthi, and later, they hung the body from the ceiling of a room to cover up the murder. “Nails of her feet have been pulled out, and the body bears marks of torture. Only a few months ago we gave Rubel one lakh taka for building a house as dowry,” he added. Neigbours alleged that Rubel and his mother used to torture Juthi physically and mentally. Several times they have heard Juthi screaming. Officer in-charge of sadar police station Hasan Hafizur Rahman said police have recovered the hanging body from the house and sent to sadar hospital morgue for autopsy.
AL leader arrested in Jessore

Police arrested a local Awami League leader from Airport Road in Jessore yesterday in connection with BCL leader Ripon Hossain murder case. Shaharul Islam, organising secretary, Jessore sadar upazila unit Awami League, was picked up by police while he was going to his village home at Balia Bhekutia. Shikder Akkas Ali, officer in-charge, Kotwali police station, said he is the main accused in Dada Ripon killing case. The BCL leader was hacked to death on March 14, 2010 over internal feud. Shaharul was charge-sheeted in the case filed by Ripon’s father Shahidul Islam on December 18, 2013.
One dies in football clash

One person was killed in a clash over a football match in sadar upazila of the district yesterday noon. The deceased has been identified as Towabur Rahman, 43, of Bhatgaon village under Auliapur Union. Police said during the football match at Auliapur on Tuesday afternoon the two teams, one led by Firoz and another by Akhtar, locked in a clash. In the clash, Towabur Rahman, father of Firoz, was injured seriously. He was admitted to Thakurgaon sadar Hospital, but later shifted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to the injuries. Police arrested Aktar, 23, and Rashidul 19, after a case was lodged with Thakurgaon police station in this connection.
Man ‘kills self’ in Sunamganj
Sunamganj: A young man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of his room at Pondur village in Tahirpur upazila of the district on Wednesday night, reports UNB. The deceased was identified as Komol Sarker, 28, a resident of the village. Bishwajit Sarker, chairman of Dakhshin Sripur union parishad, said Komol committed suicide by hanging himself with the ceiling of his room at night. On information, police recovered the body around 10pm and sent it to Sumanganj Sadar Hospital for an autopsy. Mohammad Shahidullah, officer-in-charge of Tahirpur Police Station, confirmed the incident.
