Around 200 students of Neamatpur Government Primary school are attending classes under a makeshift shed beside the abandoned building of the 80-year-old institution. There are no classes when it rains. Zinia Khatun, a student of class-V, said: “We are taking our lessons under a makeshift shed as the main building of our school is on the verge of collapse. If it rains classes are suspended and we go home.” Abdul Khalek, a guardian of a student, said It is very risky to send children to school. There are some big trees nearby and if branches of those trees fall on the shed there might be loss of lives, he said. School sources said the school was established in 1935 on 153 decimals of land at Neamatpur village in Kaliganj upazila of the district. There are 173 students in the school. It has earned a good reputation for excellence in terminal examinations. In 2012, 18 students appeared for terminal exam and all of them passed, in 2013, all of the 24 students passed while in 2014 all of the 26 students appeared for the exam came out successful.
The building that has been abandoned was constructed in 1994. It has now become dilapidated without maintenance and refurbishment. It might collapse at any time. Fearing loss of lives, headmistress Nurhjahan Khatun has been conducting the classes under a makeshift shed that was built by the school authorities and with the assistance of the local MP. Earlier, the classes were held under open sky. The headmistress said she had left the dilapidated building fearing loss of lives. The plasters of the ceiling are falling through the rusted and worn out iron rods. The pillars have developed cracks. It might collapse at any time. The newly built shed is also not very safe and it could also be blown away by storm.
Kaliganj upazila primary Education Officer Salma Khatun said: “We have visited the school and the upazila engineer has already surveyed the school and declared it risky. We have sent proposal to the higher authorities for construction of a new building at the site.”
