Flood control embankment collapses

GAIBANDHA: Flood control embankment of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) has collapsed in three points at Gobindaganj, Sundarganj and Palashbari upazilas last two days inundating fresh areas of the upazilas, reports BSS. Due to the flood, more than 40 unions of the upazilas have been affected leaving over 1,50,000 people marooned side by side with affecting standing crops particularly T-Aman paddy and summer vegetables. The people of the Brahmaputra river basin in the district have been marooned creating untold sufferings for want of food and drinking water. The standing crops on 35,049 hectares of land have also been affected making the growers worried about their crops and food security. The fishes on the 120-pond have also been washed away due to the inundation causing the fish farmers are facing economical losses. The amount of losses in agri and fisheries sectors caused by flood could not be known immediately. Executive engineer of BWDB here Abdul Awal said the water level of the Karotoa rose by 10 cm last 24-hour ending at 9 am yesterday       and the river was flowing 34 cm above its danger mark at Katakhali Bridge point of Gobindaganj upazila.
