Man throws acid on wife
Our correspondent, Jessore
A young, educated wife looking to join the workforce has paid a cruel price for her ambitions, as her husband threw acid on her face almost first thing on Wednesday morning. The victim is Razia Sultana, 30, daughter of Monir Uddin of Kashipur village in Manirampur upazila of Jessore, where the incident occurred as Razia was visiting her parents. Family members rushed in hearing her screams, and she was first rushed to the Jessore General Hospital. Doctors there referred her to the Burn Unit at Dhaka Medical, considering the severe damage suffered by her eyes.
Meanwhile the insecure husband, Kamruzzaman, a motorcyclist for hire hailing from Bangalipur village in the same upazila, has gone into hiding. Talking to our Jessore correspondent, Razia relayed how she had recently completed her Master’s and was looking for work. This did not sit well with Kamruzzaman, who was against her decision to look for work.
“We had been arguing on-and-off over this. Today in the morning as I just sat there in my father’s house, before I could realize anything he appeared out of nowhere and hurled the acid targeting my face and eyes. I could only scream as I felt my own face get scalded,” Razia said. Duty doctor Najrul Islam said, Razia’s face and eyes were burned severely by the acid and so she was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment after first aid there. The alleged husband could not be detained as he went into hiding after the incidence, said Officer-in-Charge of Manirampur Police Station. No case was filed till filing of the report. Police assured they would take steps to this effect, but added the caveat that Razia would need to step forward and file the complaint, said the OC of Manirampur.
