Bhola: President Md Abdul Hamid yesterday underscored the need for continuing democratic process to ensure sustainable and vigorous development in the country, reports UNB.

“Democracy can ensure the fundamental rights of people, rule of law, human rights, and freedom of speech and expression. Therefore, regardless of party and opinion, collective effort is very important to continue democratic process and its institutionalization,” the President said while addressing a programme at Fatema Khanam Degree College ground here on Thursday.

Due to political reasons, there may be differences among parties and opinions. But keep in mind that the country, acquired through the sacrifice of millions of martyrs, is for all, he said.

So, it is expected that everyone will contribute from their respective position to build a beautiful and livable Bangladesh for the next generation, the President said.

About inauguration of a Liberation War museum in Bhola Sadar, he said the inhabitants of Bhola district can know about the contributions of the heroes of this region during the Liberation War through the museum, he said.

Terming the Liberation War a glorious chapter in the history of the Bangali nation, the President said the victory in the Liberation War is the biggest achievement of the Bangalis. “Through this, the Bangalee nation made its own position in the world civilization.”

He said every citizen of the country will have to know the real information about the independence movement and the history of the Liberation War.

“We also need to know who contributed to the Liberation War. We have to show proper respect to those who have brought independence for us sacrificing their fresh blood. All have to continue united efforts to achieve the goal for which they (freedom fighters) took part in the Liberation War,” he said.Mentioning that preservation of the memory of the Liberation War and the establishment of museum at district and upazila level is very important, the President said the new and future generation, who did not see the Liberation War, must know the history of our independence movement and the Liberation War.

He also said that the government has already taken various initiatives to preserve the memory of the Liberation War and rehabilitate the freedom fighters.

Chaired by Principal of Bhola government college Parvin Khanam, the programme was also addressed, among others, by Commerce Minister Tofael Ahmed and deputy minister for Forest and Environment Abdullah Al Islam Jacob, MP.

Earlier, President Hamid inaugurated a Swadhinata Museum at Bangla Bazar of the district. President’s spouse Rashida Khanam also accompanied the President at the museum where they enjoyed a documentary on Bangladesh and Bangabandhu.

Meanwhile, the President laid foundation stone of Char Kukri Mukri Tourism Centre and an Eco-Park there. He also distributed winter clothes (blankets) among the poor people of Char Kukri-Mukri Union.

Earlier on Wednesday President Md Abdul Hamid urged all to give their coordinated effort to make the country a prosperous state in the 21st century utilizing scattered possibilities across the country.

“The development potential of Bangladesh is very bright. But our possibilities are scattered in different parts of the country. Therefore, to make the country a prosperous state in the 21st century, these development possibilities must be used properly with the coordinated efforts of people’s representatives, entrepreneurs, government employees and local people,” the President said while exchanging views with local professionals and civil society at Charfassion in the afternoon. President also formally inaugurated South Asia’s tallest watch tower built in Charfasson today.

Terming development as continues process, the President Hamid said development does not come by its own, it is to be achieved. “So we have to go ahead with what we own without depending on others,” he said.

Around 17 crore people have been living in the small country of 54,000 square miles area. It should be seriously considered at every step of development that if this huge population cannot be turned into human resource, then all development plans of the country will fail, the President Hamid said.

He urged local professionals, civil societies and government and private employees to reflect people’s expectations and opinions in their activities as they work on the ground staying in direct touch with the people. “Remember, the government’s image, success and failure is dependent on your conduct and responsibilities. So you need to bring about qualitative changes in government services as per the needs of the hour as the public servant”, President said.

He also asked them to transform the government’s service centers into a solution hub for the people’s problems. “Maintain honesty, devotion and sincerity in performing duties and prioritize public interest,” the President said.
