A suicidal goal helped Abahani Limited defeat Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra by a solitary goal in the Walton Independence Cup football tournament yesterday at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
After winning the match Abahani became Group C champions and Russel as runners-up when both sides' booked quarterfinal berths earlier.
It was second match for both Abahani and Russel when the match was simply an academic formality earlier confirmed their qualification in the last eight.
In the pressure less game both sides played with positive approach to advance as group champions when Abahani had better control, but in respect of producing scoring chances both sides were almost equal.
However, Russel produced the day’s first opportunity early in the 11th minute with Kaiser Rabbi entered into danger area with the ball down the left and could not control himself as he slept down but availed the second chance to shot the ball into post but his attempt was going outside the far post. Alamgir Rana, who was very closer to the ball, disappointed all failing to push it into near post.
While the match was heading to a goalless draw, Kahalequzzaman just gifted a goal to Abahani on 67th minute when the defender trying to give a back pass with his header to goalkeeper Biplob, sent it into their own post when the veteran custodian left the post to grip a floating ball came from a left side (1-0).
