No decision yet on number of teams

Rangpur, Sylhet so far clear unpaid BPL dues: Sinha
Sports Reporter

Rangpur Riders and Sylhet Royals are only the two franchisees to clear the outstanding amount of the previous two editions of Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) within the deadline set by BCB, ended yesterday.
Despite all of the franchisees showed their interest to be the part of the third edition of BPL, a high up of the tournament committee said, only Rangpur and Sylhet came up with positive mindset by clearing the dues.
Barisal Burners on the other hand offered BCB to clear the dues in installment to which the board was not so keen while the other franchisees were silent so far.
“Only Sylhet and Rangpur came up to clear the dues. Rangpur in fact gave the unpaid amount before the deadline was set. Sylhet also provided Tk. 1 crore pay order in addition of bank guarantee of Tk. 1 crore. They will clear the rest of the amount of the bank guarantee by August 30,” said BPL chairman Afzalur Rahman Sinha yesterday.
“Barisal offered us to pay the amount in installment but how can we believe a team who has not taken any move to clear the amount for the last two years,” Sinha questioned.
The aspirant for the BPL franchisees now stood to 13 with those two after 11 new enterprises – BEXIMCO, Mediacom (Square), Sohana Group of Industries, BBS Cables, DBL Group, Fiber @Home Limited, Blues Communication, Bengal Communication, Networld BD, Axiom Technologies
and Index Group—submitted their Expression of Interest (EOI).
The BCB however still remained undecided to how many teams will take part in tournament. In the first edition of the tournament six teams played while Rangpur was added in the second edition. The BCB President Nazmul Hassan Papon earlier indicated the number of the team could be increased if the number of applicant is more than the expectation.
Dhaka Metro is expected to be emerged as the new franchise but Sinha ruled out the name, saying that a team with this name is unlikely.
But if the number of the team is increased, a new team named Comilla Legends could be emerged. The owner of the Sylhet Royals Nafisa Kamal and her family, originally from Comilla, is interested to buy a franchise with her name. In that case they would opt out Sylhet Royals.
The owner of the franchisees could name their team according to the wish.
“The board will decide who will get which team. We can’t say yet how many teams will take part in the tournament, may be seven or eight. It will depend on the number of eligible applicants. But a team named Dhaka Metro is unlikely, it could be the team outside of Dhaka,” Sinha said.
The anti-corruption unit of BCB and ICC will jointly work in order to prevent the tournament from all kinds of fixing.
