Australia shouldn’t be written off despite being in transitional phase after some key players of the team retired from the international cricket, warned chief selector Faruque Ahmed.
The Aussies struggle in the recently concluded Ashes raised the hope of Bangladesh’s chance considering the way they have been playing over the years in all format of the cricket. Moreover the team with transitional phase is believed to be shaky, presenting the country a golden chance of registering their first ever victory against a top flight nation.
Pakistan could be the burning example to how a new team gets it tough to cope with the condition. Once who was invincible to Bangladesh, was made whipping boys losing the three-match ODI series, literally without much resistance. Bangladesh then achieved a credible draw in the first Test, proving the historic series whitewash was not fluke.
But Australia shouldn’t be rated like Pakistan, given the strong structure of the country’s domestic cricket, said Faruque.
“They are struggling. But you cannot write off Australia team,” the chief selector told the reporters.
“You see their previous record. Even their new players are so seasoned to play at the international level what you cannot find in the other team.”
Australia will play two-match Test series here in October under the leadership of Steven Smith. With opener Chris Rogers and Smith’s predecessor Michael Clarke, the mainstay of the middle order, retired, the batting line up looked inexperienced.
“They have very good structure. You send whichever team in Australia they get defeated. Considering that, Even if they come with new player, yes they will lack experience, but I don’t think that will create any difference in their strength.”
But what Faruque believed was that Bangladesh
would have a chance to do well against Australia given they are the team in transitional phase.
“Bangladesh team is now playing very good cricket which is a fact. It’s not that one particular series, its series of series. So when a team is in form they don’t bother about opponents. We lost two T20s and an ODI against South Africa but comeback strongly. So these are strong sign for a team to become very strong team,” he pointed out.
“Australia are strong team. But Bangladesh team is in such a position, we have got few experienced player and with the help of them I think our team has the ability to do well against Australia.”
Bangladesh won seven Tests since their elevation to the Test cricket in 2000, all of which came against Zimbabwe and a depleted West Indies side.
They drew the one-off Test against India and two-match Test series against South Africa, largely due to the blessings of the rain but the performance against South Africa, a team with outstanding away Test record, could be encouraging.
“If you see our Test statistics, it’s not very enviable. It’s true that we are playing good cricket. But to do well in Test we need to wait for a long period, which is what we are working on. You cannot do well sporadically well in Tests. It needs time. We all know Test is the real Test of the game.”
