Deposition of witnesses ends

The first additional district and sessions judge of Tangail, Abul Mansur Miah, ended recording the deposition of witnesses yesterday in the Rupa gang-rape and murder case.

Miah is also the acting judge of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal of Tangail.

Three more witnesses—the investigating officer (IO) of the case and two representatives of Soa Paribahan—gave their testimonies from January 21.

 The depositions of 27 witnesses have been recorded so far.

The court fixed the date for examining the accused under Section 342 of the BPC on January 28.

Kayum Khan Siddiki, sub-inspector of the Madhupur police dtation and IO of the case, testified before the court on Sunday.

Md Akhteruzzamn, owner of Soa Paribahan, his wife Amena Begum and his son Sabbir Hossain also appeared before the court and confirmed the identification of the five accused employees of the transport service. Amena Begum identified the five workers of the bus in which Rupa was travelling.

Delwar Hossain and Shameem Chowdhury, pleaders for the accused, examined the three witnesses on Sunday and the IO yesterday for about four hours.

Public prosecutor Nasimul Akhter said the witnesses’ deposition ended yesterday. Arguments will be held on the next day of hearing.

 Human rights activist Ataur Rahman Azad expressed hope that the case would conclude soon.

 In total, 27 persons, including the plaintiff sub-inspector, IO of the case, medical officer who conducted the autopsy, four executive magistrates who recorded the confessions of the accused under Section 144, Rupa’s brother and those connected with the case, testified from January 3 to January 23.

 Zakia Sultana Rupa, 23, was killed after being gang-raped in a running bus on August 25.

 Police arrested five members of the bus staff on August 29. They were Shameem , Zahangir, Akram , driver of the bus Habib, and bus supervisor Safar Ali Gendhu. They are currently in jail.
