If he was alive today, ‘Nayak Raj’-famed legendary actor Razzak would step into 77 years today. But before that he left this world forever, leaving behind a host of fans and well-wishers, viewers, colleagues and family members to mourn his death. He died on August 21 last year and his death created a vacuum in the country’s film industry. This is also like the industry has lost its guardian. However, today is the birthday of great actor Razzak.
Razzak’s family members and Bangladesh Film Artistes’ Association (BFAA) are going to hold various types of programmes separately to mark the day.
Razzak’s youngest son Khalid Hossain Shamrat informed that the family will offer prayer and reading the Holy Quran at the graveyard of Razzak in Banani of the capital in the morning. Then after the Zuhr prayer, they will feed madrasa students, orphans and poor people in the afternoon. Besides, after Asr prayer, a special prayer will be offered seeking the salvation of the departed soul of the great actor at Azad Mosque in Gulshan.
Shamrat said, “I only seek prayer from everyone that may almighty grant my father Jannah! I always feel proud to be the son of a father like him.”
On the other hand, Bangladesh Film Artistes’ Association will place floral wreaths at the graveyard of Razzak in the morning, BFAA general secretary Zayed Khan informed. The association will also place floral wreath at the memorial stone of Razzak on the premises of Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC). Zayed Khan also informed that they will discuss with the BFDC managing director about naming a floor of BFDC after actor Razzak’s name.
Razzak was born on January 23 in 1942 in Naktala of South Kolkata. His parents Akbar Hossain and Nisarunnesa died at early ages. During his adolescence, he participated in theatre productions in Kolkata. While studying at a college in Kolkata, he made his first film appearance in ‘Ratan Lal Bangali’. Hoping to become a film star, Razzak went to study film in Filmalaya in Mumbai, India in 1961. Returning from Mumbai, he performed in two movies in Kolkata, ‘Pankotilak’ and ‘Shilalipi’. However, the Hindu-Muslim riot which broke out in 1964 forced Razzak and his family to migrate to Dhaka.
After migrating to then East Pakistan, Razzak found the path to stardom was not easy. Initially, he acted in TV plays. He became a favourite of the viewers of Pakistani television, acting in the series ‘Ghoroa’.
However, he remained focused on his dream of becoming a 'film star'. A pioneering filmmaker in Bangladesh, Abdul Jabbar Khan, helped Razzak to join Iqbal Films Limited. Razzak was the assistant to the director Kamal Ahmed in the movie ‘Ujala’.
Razzak's first big break in cinema came with his role in Zahir Raihan's ‘Behula’ (1966).
Razzak's major breakthrough in movies was his performance in Salahuddin's ‘Tero Nombor Feku Ostagar Lane’. He acted in other movies like ‘Neel Akasher Nichey’, ‘Maynamati’, ‘Moner Moto Bou’, ‘Swaralipi’, ‘Osru Diye Likha’, ‘Jibon Theke Ney’a, and ‘Obujh Mon’.
He has acted in leading roles with many prominent actors, including Anwar Hossain, Bulbul Ahmed, Sohel Rana, Ilias Kanchan, Shuchanda, Shabana, Bobita, Kabori, Sujata, Shabnam and others. He appeared in a number of films opposite actress Shabana.
He went on to make more than 300 appearances in Bengali and Urdu movies. He also directed around sixteen movies.
