Youth gets life for killing easy-bike driver

A Gazipur court sentenced a youth life term imprisonment for killing an easy-bike driver at Baranagar village under Kaliganj upazila of the district in 2015.  The Gazipur District and Sessions judge AKM Enamul Haque delivered the verdict yesterday. The court also fined the convict Tk 5,000, in default, to suffer three months more in jail. The court also awarded five years imprisonment to six others in the case and fined them Tk 2,000, in default, three months more imprisonment. The life term convict was Mohammed Masum, 28, of Baranagar area in the upazila. The court also sentenced Masum five years imprisonment in another section of the case.

The others six convicted were Masum’s  father Angur Khan, 50, his elder brother Sumon, 25, younger brother  Mohammed Rozon, 22, Akber Ali, 54 of same area, his son Mohammed Ridoy, 20 and Mozibur Rahman, 24, of same area.

According to the prosecution, the victim Abdul Hamid and convicted Masum were easy bike driver who locked into an altercation over driving on March 08 in 2015. While Abdul Hamid went to Masum’s house for mutual the incident, Masum and his associates attacked him with sticks, hammer and sharp weapons, leaving Hamid seriously injured. Locals rescued him and sent him to Kaliganj upazila health complex. Later he was shifted to Dhanmondi General Hospital in Dhaka for better treatment where he died on March 11.  Victim’s wife Aawlia Begum filed a case with Kaliganj police station in this connection on March 12. Later, sub inspector of Kaliganj police station Torikul Islam submitted charge sheet against seven accused of the case on September 22.  After examining the documents and 11 witnesses, the court announced the verdict yesterday.
