Village Police ask for pay hike

Demo from Feb 1-28 if demands not met

Bangladesh Village Police Employees Union has threatened to go on a demonstration to realise their demand for pay hike, reports UNB. Some 46,870 members of the force have long been asking for their salaries and allowances in equivalence to Class-IV employees of the government. At a press meet held at Nirmal Sen Auditorium of Topkhana Road on Sunday, Bangladesh Village Police Employees Union announced that they would stage demonstration from February 1 to February 28 to press home their demand.

The Union's Secretary General, M A Naser said yet after doing daylong duties throughout the month, Village Police members currently draw a poor amount of Tk. 3,000 as salary. He also government has long been reluctant in paying any heed to their demand.

Acting President of the Union, Nazrul Islam said, from January 1-15 Village Police members formed human chains in respective Upazila Parishad and submitted memorandum containing their demand to Prime Minister through Upazila Nirbahi Officer.

He said, however, there has been no word of assurance from the authority concerned as of today.

From February 1 to 15 Village Police members will form human chain and again submit memorandum to PM at respective District Commissioner's Office and if their demand is not met by February 28, they will gather in front of National Press Club and announce stringent movement programme.

Speaking at a programme of the Union in early 2015, State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Md Moshiur Rahman Ranga had said the government would take effective steps to increase salaries and allowances of village police for improving their living standard in an effort to enhance their involvement in rural security.
