Batsmen dominated their counterparts as three centuries have been produced on the close of the opening day in the third round fixture of the Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL) at two different venues across the country yesterday.
Liton Kumar Das and Zakir Hasan of Islami Bank East Zone smashed centuries against Walton Central Zone at the Shaheed Kamruzamman Stadium in Rajshahi, whilst Mizanur Rahman of BCB North Zone hit hundred against Prime Bank South Zone at the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in Khulna.
Central vs East
Opted to bat first in Khulna’s batting pitch, Islami Bank East Zone staged a strong comeback after losing their openers- Mehedi Maruf (17) and Mominul Haque (4)- in the space of 50 runs. The team is now on course of mustering a healthy total as they put on 332 for three before finishing the day-1 game.
It is wicketkeeper-batsman Liton Kumar Das, who bailed East Zone out from the precarious (50-2) condition by hitting 193 runs with Zakir Hasan for the third wicket stand. The 23-year right-handed batsman brought up his first century in this BCL but overall 10th first class century before being caught out.
Dinajpur-born lad bashed a patient 112 off 186 deliveries that laced with eight boundaries and one six.
Together with Tasamul Haque, Zakir Hasan thereafter clubbed an invaluable 89 for the unbeaten fourth wicket partnership. Zakir played 235 balls and clattered 18 fours to remain indefatigable on 156.
Tasamul Haque was at stumps on 35 not out.
Spinning all-rounder Suvagata Hom Chowdhury, who dropped out of the national team for his lackluster performance, picked up two wickets for Central Zone with his sheer spinning spell. He was assisted by paceman Abu Haider Rony, who snapped up one wicket.
North vs South
Put into bat, BCB North Zone made a solid start through their openers Mizanur Rahman and Zunaid Siddique as they made 169 for the opening stand. The North finally ended the day with 214-3.
Mizanur blasted 155-ball 106 that contained 16 fours before being bowled by left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak, the experienced spinner, who recently set a record of scalping 500 first-class wickets, later removed Nazmul Hossain Shanto and Forhad Hossain for ducks to stretch his tally further.
Zunaid then partnered with Naeem Islam and attempted to steady the ship and finished the day to add 43 runs on the board.
The opening batsman, Zunaid Siddique, is 18 runs away from his 12th first class century. He clouted nine fours and two sixes in his unbeaten knock of 148-ball 82.
Naeem Islam remained unbeaten on 25.
