The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has sought necessary papers from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to investigate alleged laundering of Tk 325 crore and the selling of fake certificates by the authorities of the University of South Asia. In a letter to the UGC on January 10, ACC assistant secretary Jahangir Alam said, “There has been allegation of amassing of illegal money and property through money laundering of Tk 325 crore to London and the selling of fake certificates, irregularities and corruption against Dr MA Muhith, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of South Asia and others.”

The letter further said some papers were needed for a fair investigation into the matter. The documents are of the administrative permission and academic approval of the university at Banani in the capital and the report of the field visit to the university by the UGC on Aug 7, 2016.

UGC sources said, on Aug 7, 2016, a four-member team led by UGC chairman Abdul Mannan paid a sudden visit to the university. The team did not find the university Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Treasurer on the campus. The UGC

chairman expressed grave concerns over various irregularities at the university. Later, the team recommended to the ministry the closure of the university. In 2015, a UGC team visited the university and recommended improvement in the quality of education but the university paid no heed, UGC sources said.  The sources said they sent the necessary papers sought by the ACC yesterday for the sake of the investigation into the allegation against the University of South Asia.

“We have received some papers from the UGC and some papers are under process. Besides, we will collect papers from the bank in this regard,” ACC assistant director Jahangir Alam told The Independent yesterday.

“The matter is sensitive as the future of students is involved. As we have got some allegations against the persons concerned of the university, we will investigate them after getting all necessary papers,” he added.
