Youth killed, 50 hurt in clash

HABIGANJ: A young man was killed and 50 others were injured in a clash between two rival groups at Kashipur village in Sadar upazila yesterday morning, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Swapan Miah, 25, son of Surat Ali, a resident of the same village.

Officer-in-charge of Sadar Model Police Station Yasinul Haque said there had been a long-standing dispute between Sultan Miah and Salamat Miah over a disputed land. A clash ensued between them over the issue yesterday morning that left Swapan dead and 50 others injured.

Of the injured, 25 were admitted to the Zila Sadar Hospital and another one was sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

Others injured were sent to different clinics and hospitals.

Being informed, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, the OC said.

Police arrested three persons in this connection.

Two women found dead

KERANIGANJ: Police recovered the bodies of two women from Mohonpur and Amirabagh areas in Keraniganj upazila on Saturday afternoon, reports UNB.

The deceased were identified as Asma, 32, a resident of Mohanpur area and Aksa Akter Eti, 22, a resident of Amirabagh area in the upazila.

Being informed from family members, police recovered the hanging body of Asma from her father-in-law’s house in the evening, said Md Mansur Ahmed, sub-inspector of Keraniganj Model Police Station.

As family members did not file any complaint, the body was handed over to the family without autopsy.

Meanwhile, on information, police recovered the hanging body of Eti from her home in Amirabagh area in the afternoon and sent it to Mitford Hospital for autopsy, said Sub-inspector Obaidul Rahman of the police station.

Two unnatural death cases were filed.

Youth killed in road accident

NAOGAON: A motorcyclist was killed as a bus hit his motorbike in Biharinagar area under Dhamoirhat upazila yesterday morning, reports BSS.

The deceased was identified as Mominul Islam Bipul, 28, a representative of ACI Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

Officer-in-Charge of Dhamoirhat Police Station Rakibul Islam said the accident occurred when a bus hit the motorbike in the area at about 9.30 am, leaving Bipul dead on the spot.

Police recovered the body and sent it to Naogaon Sadar hospital morgue.

Two held with drug, firearms

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested two persons with 2,440 pieces of Yaba tablet, two pistols, four magazines and six rounds of bullet in two separate drives on Saturday afternoon and night.

RAB sources said the arrested persons are Swapan Ali, 38, of Ajaipur Dakkhinpara area in the town and Hakim, 26, son of Belal Uddin of Kansat Bahalabari village of Shibganj upazila.

Acting on a tip-off, an operation team of the force from Chapainawabganj camp raided the Land Office area in the town around 4-30pm and arrested Swapan with 2,440 pieces of Yaba tablet.

Later, another team of the force conducted a drive in Dhobra Bazar area under Shibganj upazila around 8 pm and arrested the alleged arms peddler Hakim with the firearms and ammunition.

The arrested persons were handed over to the concerned police stations.

Unidentified body found

SATKHIRA: Police recovered the bullet-hit body of an unidentified young man at Kalaroa upazila yesterday morning, reports UNB.

Biplob Kumar Nath, officer-in-charge of Kalaroa Police Station, said that local people noticed the body lying in Titli Charabattola area in the morning and informed police.

Police recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy.

“The man was shot to death at pointblank range. The body bore gunshot wounds on the head “, the police officer added.
