"The contracting country has taken important steps to strengthen sustainable management and conservation of cultural heritage. The red rice production cooperation mechanism for the terraces has achieved inspiring results." At the 39th Session of the World Heritage Committee held in July 2015, the protection and management of Honghe Hani Rice Terraces was fully recognised and greatly acclaimed.

Since the cultural landscape of the Honghe Hani Rice Terraces was inscribed on the World Heritage List in June 2013, Honghe Prefecture has been constantly improving conservation mechanisms and has established a scientific and effective heritage protection system. According to Zhang Hongzhen, director of Honghe Hani Rice Terraces Administration, Honghe Prefecture has further clarified the protected scope of the Hani Rice Terraces to cover them in Yuanyang, Honghe, Lüchun and Jinping counties. Every year since 2014, ten million yuan is set aside for the protection of the Hani Rice Terraces.

The protection of the Hani Rice Terraces has been carried out in accordance with the associated laws and regulations and has been centred on five elements—namely forest, terraces, villages, water system and culture. Honghe Prefecture has successively developed a sustainable ecological tourism development plan, an interpretation and presentation system plan and a traditional village protection and development plan for the World Heritage site. So far, 20 traditional villages and 419 traditional dwellings in the protected area have been listed.

Based on the traditional water source forest protection mechanism, Honghe Prefecture has reforested the barren mountains 1,900 metres above sea level, expanded forest irrigation, improved water resource security of the rice terraces and returned the cultivated land with a slope of more than 25 degrees to forestland.
