Saif Sporting Club kept their hopes alive to qualify for the quarterfinals in the Walton Independence Cup football tournament after a goalless draw with Arambagh Krira Sangha yesterday at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
By virtue of the draw, Arambagh have also have a slim hope to make a room in the quarterfinals when they will have to face Chittagong Abahani Limited in their last group leg match. Chittagong Abahani also earned one point after a one all draw in their first match against Saif Sporting Club.
Saif Sporting Club and Arambagh KS, both had frustrating time in the league when the former derailed from the championship race after being one of the strong contenders and have also been fighting very closely up to the 15th round. While Arambagh narrowly escaped from the relegation, just before the last four matches.
However, the highlight of a miserable in the goalless match were underdog Arambagh recorded second successive draw with one of the title contenders when in the second leg match of the league they also ended a goalless draw and in their first meeting Saif won by a solitary goal.
On the day, Saif Power, though onset with some impressive moves and opened a scoring chance keeping the opponents under pressure but could not carry on the run for a long as, Arambagh despite took time to crop up with attacking mood leaving their defensive attitude.
However, Saif produced the first chance of the match and should have taken the lead early in the 19th minute but an easy opportunity was wasted by Swadhin.
Swadhin, who had rare chance to be in the starting lineup in the league, just disappointed all failing to mark the target being unmarked inside the box when Arambagh goalkeeper did a blunder giving wrong pass but the forward shot the ball outside the far post.
Arambagh then turned into more aggressive with playing some organised and disciplined game and also went closer to score goal.
The first chance came to Arambagh ways on 26th minute but Habibur Rahman Shohag squandered the opportunity, as he could not keep his cool inside the area when Mohammed Jewel after a splendid solo run made cut back for onrushing Shohag, who shot the ball straight to keeper rather into opened far post.
Arambagh, who were in the upper hands in the opening half, could have taken lead three minutes before the last whistle of the first half but Arafat Hossain could not send his header into open net when Shahriar Bappy released a cross from left.
