Seven killed in road accidents

Seven people were killed in separate road accidents in Dhaka, Sylhet and Chittagong yesterday, report agencies. Two motorcyclists were killed in the capital’s Gendaria area early yesterday when a covered van hit their motorbike.

The deceased were identified as Russel, 26, Salahuddin, 27.

The accident took place when the covered van hit a motorcycle in front of a pharmacy at Samibagh around 2:00 am, leaving all three motorcyclists injured, said Sub-inspector Abu Jafar of Gendaria Police Station.

Later, the injured were taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared two of them dead.

In Chittagong, an official of Eastern Refineries Ltd and his wife were killed after being hit by a bus in New Mansurabad area of the port city on Wednesday evening.

The deceased were identified as Abdur Rahman, 53, assistant manager of Eastern Refinery and his wife Manju Ara Begum, 45-- residents of Eastern Refinery colony at Patenga and hailing from Pangsha upazila of Rajbari district.

A speeding bus hit the couple while they were crossing a road in the area, leaving them injured critically, said Mahbubur Rahman Tuhin, elder son of the deceased. Later, they were taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital and then shifted to a private hospital where Manju Ara succumbed to her injuries around 8:00pm and Abdur Rahman at 1:00am yesterday. In Sylhet, three people were killed in a road accident in Sadar upzila yesterday afternoon.

However, the identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

Police said a truck hit a roadside tree on the Sylhet-Sunamganj road as its driver lost control over the steering,  leaving three people, including the truck driver, dead on the spot. The bodies were sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical Hospital morgue for autopsies. Shafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Jalalabad police station, said police seized the truck.
