Demand for exam, results

Students block road for 3 hours

DU Correspondent

A road blockade by students of seven colleges affiliated with Dhaka University (DU) led to a traffic gridlock at the New Market intersection and nearby streets for three hours yesterday. The protest by over 500 students was held to demand the announcement of their exam results immediately. Sources said the agitators gathered at the New Market intersection around 11 am and blocked the road, leading to massive traffic jams around Azimpur, DU campus, Science Laboratory and BGB headquarters. The students urged the DU authorities to publish the results of the second-year final exams of the 2014–15 academic session, hold the exams for third-year students and publish an academic calendar for the seven colleges.

Saidul Islam, a student of Titumir College, said: “We're frustrated because we haven’t received our results even after one year. This has led to session jam in our academic life, forcing us to stage this protest against the injustice. We want our results to be published this month.”

The students lifted their protest at 2 pm after DU vice chancellor Prof. Akhteruzzaman arrived on the scene and assured them of meeting their demands.

The education ministry had affiliated the seven colleges—Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Women’s College, Mirpur Government Bangla College and Government Titumir College—to DU in February last year. DU is in charge of conducting admission tests and set the curriculum and examination routine for these colleges.

In July 2017, Siddiqur Rahman, a student of Titumir College, had lost his eyesight after being hit by a teargas shell lobbed by police to disperse students demonstrating at Shahbagh Square to demand the holding of their exams.
