The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has accused the government of falsely implicating party chairperson Khaleda Zia and senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman as the masterminds in sabotage cases.
“Government agents had carried out acts of terror and sabotage during the previous movements of the BNP-led 20-Party Alliance. Later, the government capitalised on the incidents and accused the BNP chairperson of plotting them,” BNP spokesperson Dr Asaduzzaman Ripon told reporters yesterday at a press meet at the BNP's Naya Paltan headquarters.
The press meet came a day after Gazipur police submitted a chargesheet against 32 BNP leaders, including Tarique Rahman, under the Special Powers Act, for setting a bus ablaze, carrying out bomb attacks and vandalising
vehicles.
“The allegation against Rahman, who is now abroad for treatment with the permission of the court, is nothing but the government’s vendetta against him,” Ripon said.
He also said the Gazipur SP’s press conference where he accused Rahman of hatching a conspiracy to oust the government was unprecedented.
Ripon alleged that the government’s strategy is to pile pressure on the BNP by arresting party leaders and framing false charges against them. He termed this tactics as a “political plot” designed by the ruling party.
Ripon, international affairs secretary of the BNP, demanded immediate cancellation of the charge-sheet against Tarique Rahman.
He said that the reorganization of the party will be carried out amid all obstructions. He also said the party chairperson would announce the date for the sixth national council at an appropriate time.
