US President Donald Trump has denied that the US embassy in Israel will move to Jerusalem within a year, contradicting a statement made earlier by Israeli Premier Benyamin Netanyahu during a trip to India, reports ANSA from Tel Aviv. Speaking to news agency Reuters from Washington a few hours after Netanyahu’s comment, Trump said the embassy move would take longer. ''By the end of the year? We're talking about different scenarios'', Trump was quoted as saying by the news agency. Trump went on to explain that, ''I mean, obviously that would be on a temporary basis'', indicating that perhaps temporary arrangements could be made to enable more of the embassy's work to take place in Jerusalem. He then added that ''we're not really looking at that, no.''
Earlier, Netanyahu had said Wednesday that the US embassy would move to Jerusalem much sooner than expected, within a year, the statements came at a politically tense time after the US announced its decision to cut 65 million dollars out of a total of 125 million in funding to UNWRA, the 70-year-old United Nations body that assists Palestinian refugees.
PLO blasted the announcement, accusing the US administration of being ‘’complicit with Israel’s occupation’’. The organization’s Hanan Ashrawi added that the decision would bring ‘’more instability to the region’’. ‘’There is no guilt in striking the innocent’’, he also said.
