Bangladesh needs to forge partnership to achieve SDGs

BSS

Bangladesh needs to forge partnership with development partners, private sector and other stakeholders in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as resources mobilisation and implementation of SDGs are a big challenge, said speakers at a working session of Bangladesh Development Forum (BDF) in the capital yesterday, reports BSS.

“We want to ensure education, healthcare and other fundamental rights for all as these issues are correlated with the 17 goals of the sustainable development,” said planning minister AHM Mustafa Kamal while speaking at the session on “Integrated SDG financing and strengthening multi-stakeholder partnership”.

State minister for finance and planning MA Mannan, principle coordinator for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Affairs in the Prime Minister’s Office Abul Kalam Azad, chairman of Palli Karma- Sahayak Foundation Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad, UNDP country director Sudipto Mukherjee, Christian Eigen-Zucci of the World Bank and executive director of BRAC Muhammad Musa, among others, spoke at the session.

Planning Commission member Dr Shamsul Alam presented the keynote speech.

Kamal said SDGs have been designed not for a particular country, and all developing countries will have to achieve the SDG targets. Bangladesh will be able to achieve SDGs as it successfully implemented the MDGs, said Kamal, who chaired the session.

He said Bangladesh is the worst victim because of climate change and it has to take up various programmes to face the situation though it is not responsible in any way for climate change.

The planning minister said resources mobilisation is the biggest challenge for implementation of SDGs and urged the development partners, including the World Bank and ADB to extend financial support in this regard. Bangladesh wants to implement SDGs in cooperation of all, none will be left, he added.

UNDP country director Sudipto Mukherjee said it is urgent to improve investment climate of Bangladesh because more investment is needed to generate jobs.
