Two killed in Pabna road crash

Pabna: An auto rickshaw driver and a passenger were killed and five other passengers were injured as a bus hit the vehicle on Pabna-Ishwardi highway in Tentultola area of Ishwardi upazila yesterday noon, reports UNB.

The deceased were identified as driver Soleman, 60, and the passenger Shamsuddin Kamal, 55, residents of Bangalpara village.

The accident took place around 12 noon when a ‘Hanif Paribahan’ bus hit the auto rickshaw carrying six passengers, leaving the duo dead on the spot and five others injured.

60,000 electric meters to be set up in Jamalpur

With a view to stopping misuse of electricity, Sales and Distribution Division of Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) is to set up 60,000 pre-paid electric meters in Jamalpur district.

According to BPDB, Jamalpur regional office, pre-paid system will be set up throughout the district in different phases. A total of 12,000 pre-paid electric meters have already been installed since November, last year. All the residences and organisations will be brought under the system, sources added.

Ashutosh Barua, executive engineer of BPDB, Jamalpur said with the setting up of pre-paid meters consumers will get rid of inflated bills and proper use of electricity will be ensured.

Installing of the system across the district could be completed within next three months, he expected.

Amal Fair begins in Jessore

A two-day long fair, marking the 15th death anniversary of Amal Sen, a leader of the historic Tebhaga Movement, began on Wednesday at the playground of Bankri Government Primary School in Bagharpara upazila of Jessore district.

Social Welfare Minister Rashed Khan Menon inaugurated the fair as the chief guest. Apart from the fair many other programmes were chalked out to mark the day. The programmes included placing of floral wreath at the grave, discussion meetings and art competitions.

Amal Sen, born in 1912 in Afra village of Narail, was the lead organiser of the Narail episode of Tebhaga Andolon which spread in East Bengal and West Bengal in 1946. He was also elected president of Bangladesh Workers Party in 1992 and 1995.
