The Jinuo people were the last ethnic minority recognized by the Chinese government. They mainly live in Jinuo Township in Xishuangbanna’s Jinghong City.
Zhou Hong is a Jinuo girl who lives in Puxi Village, which is one of 45 villages in Jinuo Township. Upon graduating from college, Zhou Hong chose not to work in a big city like her classmates, but instead returned to Puxi to start a small business of her own.
For Zhou Hong, there is no place like misty little Puxi Village. At first only her family supported her decision to return home. In the eyes of other residents, what was the point of going to college if she was only to return home upon graduation? Despite this, Zhou Hong proved that she made the right decision. She opened her first teahouse and registered her own trademark, bringing in greater economic benefits. Her actions also enable more people to learn about the specialties of her hometown, as well as the culture of Jinuo people.
Her teahouse mainly sells local Pu’er tea. With the development of tourism in Xishuangbanna, more and more tourists visit Jinuo villages and tea gardens, so business at Zhou Hong’s teahouse is getting better and better.
“Tourism has helped to boost the Puer tea industry and subsequently increased the incomes of tea farmers. These developments also make more tea farmers aware of the importance of taking good care of their tea gardens and protecting the environment,” said Zhou Hong. “The villagers will become richer if I can help them sell more tea. I hope to promote local tourism and ethnic Jinuo culture with both online and offline sales of local teas. That is why I chose to stay in my hometown.”
