A proposal to form a central organisation comprising sleuths from the country’s various detective branches and personnel from other security agencies in order to curb cyber crime and to increase cyber security is awaiting approval from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), sources said.
The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regularity Committee (BTRC) Secretary, Md Sarwar Alam, told The Independent that they are trying to form a central monitoring authority in order to curb cyber crime in the country.
“We are trying to curb cyber crime related offences in the country with the help of a central monitoring authority, which will be formed after taking in experts from various departments of the government. Without the cooperation from various departments, cyber crime cannot be curbed,” said Alam. The central organisation would have strong surveillance capability and would investigate incidents and track down the perpetrators of cyber crime, he added.
He informed that the BTRC has taken steps to establish a technical system with the view to help the police in their investigation and identify cyber criminals. Apart from the BTRC, several IT departments of the government and law enforcement agencies have been working in their respective fields to bring down cyber crime.
However, the BTRC doesn’t monitor social media networking sites, including Facebook and Twitter, as they do not have any Memorandum of Understanding with the social media sites. When the need arises, the BTRC communicates with the social media networking sites that operate according their own rules and regulations.
The Awami League government has been very careful to curb cyber crime since assuming of power in 2009.
