JU Birds Fair on January 19
Jahangirnagar University: The Zoology department of Jahangirnagar University (JU) will hold a day-long Bird Fair on Friday on the premises of Zahir Raihan Auditorium on the campus for the 17th time.
Prof Dr Kamrul Hasan of Zoology department, also the convener of the fair, said like every year, the fair is going to be held with a view to creating mass awareness amongst the people to save birds from extinction.
The fair will be jointly organised by Zoology department of JU, Wildlife Rescue Centre, Bangladesh Bird Club, Arannayk Foundation, Chhanel 24, IUCN and Bangladesh Forest Department. JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Farzana Islam is expected to inaugurate the fair at 9:30am.
The day-long fair will include inter-university bird identification competition, photography exhibition on birds, painting competition for children, bird watching through telescope, quiz competition, annual report presentation on birds’ seen at JU and award giving ceremony, etc.
This year a media award will be given to journalist for best reporting on birds.
8th Chemistry Olympiad to begin on Friday
Shahjalal University: The 8th Bangladesh Chemistry Olympiad will begin on Friday.
HSC and A level students will participate in the Olympiad organised by Bangladesh Chemical Society.
The preliminary round will be organised at eleven centres of different divisions on the day while the final round will be held at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) on February 16. The registration for the 8th Bangladesh Chemistry Olympiad started from December 17 in 2017 and continued till January 10.
The Chemistry Olympiad of Sylhet region will be held at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, said Professor Dr Abdus Sobhan of Chemistry department.
Around 1,500 students from 42 educational institutions in four districts will participate in the Olympiad in Sylhet region.
IU forms body to probe teacher’s cheque scam
Islamic University: Islamic University (IU) authorities formed a three-member probe body, led by Professor Dr Mustafa Kamal of Mathematics department, against Ruhul Amin, an assistant professor of Finance and Banking department of the university, to investigate his cheque scam within 15 working days.
The other members of the probe body are - Professor M Shahdath Hossain Azad of English department and Professor Abdus Shaheed Miah of Accounting and Information Systems department, sources at IU registrar office said on Monday evening.
IU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr M Harun-Ur-Rashid Askari said that they would take stern action against Ruhul Amin if the probe body finds him guilty. On October, 31, 2017, an allegation of cheque scam was raised against Ruhul Amin as he sent a cheque of Agrani Bank; IU Branch (Account no-10715) amounting Tk 12 lakh to Shariful Islam, from whom Ruhul took Tk 15 lakh luring Shariful to give him job at Al-hadith and Islamic Studies department of the university.
Later, Shariful found no money in the account and filed a case against him with Kushtia Police Station.
