While he cemented his place in the limited over cricket effortlessly, life was not so easy for Soumya Sarkar when it is a matter of Test cricket. He scored just 37 in three Tests at an average of just 21.40, a stat which doesn’t match the player with quality abundance. In contrast, he scored 682 runs in 16 ODIs at a staggering average of 49.42 with one century and four half-centuries. His top form is one of the main reasons in changing the total team complexion in the limited over cricket.
But the poor form in longer version cricket cost his place during the Test series against South Africa. And it looked unlikely that he could get back his Test spot soon. Soumya however had no reservation to admit his Test from was something which could secure his place. “I couldn’t prove myself in the longer version cricket with the number of matches which I played,” he said. “Playing Test cricket is the ultimate dream of any player. Now I concentrate on honing the skill, required to be successful in the Test cricket.”
“Test is completely a different format of game. It has different kind of beauty and type. I don’t want to change my batting style. What I want to do, to bring up some adjustments. It’s a demanding format. I know I have to put a lot of hard work to attain the place in Test squad. I am determined to do it.”
Making his place in the team as pace bowling all-rounder initially, Soumya’s audacious batting skill promptly promoted him as a genuine batsman at the top of the batting order. However he said, he has a dream to play against Australia. “I had wishes to play against Australia in the World Cup. Unfortunately we missed the match (due to torrential shower). We have Test matches against them ahead. I am very much excited to play against them. Let’s see what will happen and how much I prove myself against them,” he revealed.
“Playing better cricket in the home series against Australia is now one and only target in my life. I will try to play better and show off myself properly,” the 22-year-old insisted. The players will get the opportunity to have some match practice as the BCB decided to arrange two rounds of NCL ahead of the start of the Test series against Australia.
“If we could play some practice matches ahead of any series it will be better not only for players but also for the team. It will be better for us to apply our skills and techniques in the match what we have learned from the conditioning camp,” he replied in a query. Soumya opened the proceeding in domestic competition but he is playing at middle-order position in Test. But he said that he is agreed to play at which position he will be chosen for.
The players however had a session about anti-doping ahead of their practice session yesterday. They were given the advice which medicine they should take or which should be avoided. Soumya said: “Anti-doping issues are discussed in the meeting. Nothing else”
