Fog halts Paturia-Daulatdia ferry services in Manikganj
Manikganj: Ferry services on Paturia-Daulatdia route in the Padma River have remained suspended due to poor visibility caused by dense fog yesterday morning, reports UNB.
The authorities of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) suspended the ferry services and plying of the water vessels on the route since 7am due to blurred visibility caused by thick fog, said Mohiuddin Russell, manager (Commercial) of BIWTC at Aricha.
Two ferries remained stuck in the middle of the river with around one hundred vehicles and passengers on board. The ferry services will resume once the visibility returns, he added.
Truck driver lands in jail over death of 13 in road crash
Chuadanga: A court here on Monday sent a truck driver to jail in a case filed over the killing of 13 day-labourers in a road accident in Damurhuda upazila last year, reports UNB.
Mostafizur Rahman, judge of Damurhuda Cognisance Court, passed the order after Rajib Hossain, 30, the prime accused in the case filed over the accident, surrendered before his court.
At least 13 people were killed as Rajib’s truck collided head-on with a human-hauler ‘Alamsadhu’ at Joyrampur village on the Chuadanga-Darsana road in Damurhuda upazila on March 26, 2016.
A case was filed against Rajib and his helper Jewel over the accident. Jewel surrendered before the court on November 29 last.
Man held with yaba tablets

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-5 in a drive arrested an alleged illegal drug peddler with 995 pieces of yaba tablet from a house at Chakpustam Shirotola village under Gomostapur upazila of the district yesterday morning.
The arrested person was identified as M Emdadul Haque, 41, a resident of the same area.
On a tip-off, a team of the elite force conducted the drive in the area at about 11.45 am and arrested Emdadul with the yaba tablets from his house, a RAB official said.
Later, the arrested person was handed over to Gomostapur Thana police.
‘Smuggler’ arrested with gold
Chuadanga: Police arrested a suspected smuggler along with 64 tola of smuggled gold from bus stand area of Damurhuda upazila headquarters yesterday morning, reports UNB.
The arrestee was identified as Kamal Hossain, 40, son of Munsur Ali, a resident of Anshtola area of Jibannagar upazila.
On secret information, a team of police conducted a drive and arrested Kamal along with the gold smuggled from India worth Tk 32 lakh, said Akram Hossain, officer-in-charge of Damurhuda Police Station.
400 distressed people get blankets in Gaibandha
GAIBANDHA: Some 400 distressed and poor people of different unions including Gaibandha Municipality of the district got blankets from Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS), district unit, yesterday, reports BSS.
A simple function was also held at the office here on Monday afternoon with secretary of BDRCS, district unit, Rezaul Karim Reza in the chair.
Mayor of Gaibandha Municipality Advocate Shah Masud Zahangir Kabir Milon addressed the function and formally distributed the 400 blankets to the distressed and the poor people as the chief guest.
Executive member of the unit Sultana Islam Doly and other officials including journalists were present on the occasion.
Chairman of Gaibandha Zila Parishad Ataur Rahman Sarker who is also the chairman of BDRCS, district unit said earlier, the unit distributed cash Taka 4000, and a packet of 8 sorts of vegetable seeds to 6010 flood affected families each last month.
Apart from it, the unit also disbursed 2 bundle of color corrugated iron sheet to each of the 483 flood victims of the district during the time, the chairman also said.
4 held, 281 liters liquor seized
KHULNA: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a special drive arrested four people and seized around 281 litres of local liquor (Wine or Cholai Mod) from Railway Sweeper Colony and Station Road areas in the city on Monday night, reports BSS.
The arrested are Tapon, Sumon, Irfan and Razu.
Company Commandar of RAB-6 Additional Police Super Enayet Hossain Mannan said the arrested were listed illegal drug traders of the area and were engaged these illegal drugs trading since long.
The arrested persons and seized liquor were handed over to Khulna Kotwali Police Station today, he added.
Body recovered in Jamalpur

Police recovered the body of a man from a pond in Jamalpur sadar upazila yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Saiful Islam of village Langalzora in Jamalpur sadar.
According to Police souces, Saiful Islam, also a motor mechanics went out of home on Saturday night and did not return home.
On Monday local people found the body floating in a pond at Dapunia and informed police.
Police recovered the body and sent it to Jamalpur General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Police said the body bore no injury.
A case was registered with Jamalpur sadar police station.
