Gundam Build Fighters Try: a hot-blooded sequel

Gundam Build Fighters Try: a hot-blooded sequel

Noirit Mustapha

Gundam Build Fighters Try begins seven years after the events of the first series, with gunpla battle booming as brightly as ever. However, even though Sei from the previous series was declared world champion, the novelty of the sport began to lose its sheen back in his school. Fumina Hoshino, president and sole member of the Gunpla Battle Club, comes under fire from the Model Building Club as they intend to dissolve the former into the latter. Once again, another surprise encounter with a mysterious young boy, this time in the form of trained martial artist Sekai Kamiki, brings about new adventures and rivalries in this beautiful and exciting world of gunpla battle.
Comparing the first episodes of both series, it’s extremely evident that the hype and awesome factor was amped up even further with Try. In fact, if the original series mimicked classic Gundam shows with their more controlled tone, Try looks to the more battle-based action series Mobile Fighter G Gundam for inspiration. Typical to shounen fighters, there’s a lot more shouting and super move chanting going on during the fights, with the soundtrack following suit. The higher animation budget shows in the fights themselves too, with some of the more exciting looking battles taking place early and later on.
However, with all the flair that Try adds, one can’t help but think it lost a little bit of substance along the way; some of that charm that made the original Build Fighters so appealing. The characters take slightly longer to grow attached to while some can just be plain annoying. The series teases the comeback of a lot of the older characters, but very few are actually recurring, while only a few others even get cameos. The fights can sometimes even be painfully predictable in terms of structure and outcome, and the finale is nowhere near as amazing as the first. Nevertheless, Try succeeded in what it aimed to do, and that was deliver more of the same exciting battles that made the first series such a hit.
