A Chittagong court yesterday sent to jail the three lawyers who were arrested for allegedly financing the militant outfit, Shaheed Hamza Brigade, after recording deposition under Section 164 in a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
The court of Senior Judicial Magistrate, Shahidul Alam, recorded the statements of Barrister Shakila Farzana, daughter of former BNP whip Syed Wahid Alam, Md Hasanuzzaman Liton and Mahfuz Chowdhury Bapon from 1:00pm to 2:20pm. Members of the Rapid Action Battalion-7 (RAB-7) produced the accused before the court after a different terms remand in a case filed at Hathazari police station in February.
They were brought to the court at 10:00am and the court gave them three hours to think before recording their statements.
“The three lawyers made confessional statements under Section 164 before the court, saying they funded the militant outfit. After recording the deposition, the court ordered that they be sent to jail, said Abul Hasem, public prosecutor of Chittagong district.
On Monday, members of RAB showed them arrested in a case filed at the Hathazari police station under the Anti-Terrorism Act and sought a five-day remand of the accused. However, the court sent Barrister Shakila Farzana on a 48-hour remand and Md Hasanuzzaman Liton and Mahfuz Chowdhury Bapon on a 72-hour remand.
On August 23, the three lawyers made "confessional" statements before a Banskhali court in Chittagong under Section 164 following a four-day remand.
On February 19, RAB arrested 12 militants at Al Madrasatul Abu Bakar in Hathazari and seized training material and manuals.
