AL front�s leader dies in custody
A Swechchhasebak League leader, accused in a case filed under the Narcotics Control Act, died under custody at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) yesterday morning.
The deceased was identified as Farhad Hossian, 44, organising secretary of Dhaka city (North) unit of Swechchhasebak League, the volunteer wing of ruling Awami League.
Jailer of Dhaka Central Jail Nesar Ali said Farhad was taken to the DMCH from the jail after he complained of chest pain. He died at the hospital around 6:20am.
The doctors declared him dead after he was brought to the DMCH, said hospital police outposts Inspector Mozammel Haque. Haque, however, could not specify the reason of the death.
Police arrested Farhad along with 13 bottles of Phensidy syrup and 62 Yaba tablets during a drive at his office in Badda area on August 18, said officer-in-charge of Badda Police Station Abdul Jalil.
However, he was arrested during a police raid to arrest suspects of the Aug 13 shooting incident at Dhakas Badda, which left four, including local Awami League activists killed.
A case was filed against him over the seizure and the court sent him to jail.
A shooting incident at the capitals Badda on Aug 13 left many injured. Four including, Swechhasebak League Dhaka North units Literature Affairs Secretary Mahbubur Rahman Gama, later succumbed to the injuries.
On Aug 20, Badda Unit Juba League activist Saiful Islam was killed in Gazipur during what the police described as a shootout.
