Youth gets life term for killing auto-rickshaw driver

A court in Gazipur yesterday sentenced a youth to life term imprisonment for killing a CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver in Gazipur 2014. The court also fined the youth Tk 10, 000, in default, the accused will have to suffer three months more in jail. Gazipur District and Sessions Judge Court Judge AKM Enamul Haque handed down the verdict yesterday morning in presence of the accused. The convicted was Mohammed Alam, 20, son of Babor Ali of Sahapara area under Haluaghat upazila in Mymensingh district. Besides, the court also fined him Tk 10,000 more and three years rigorous jail for stealing the auto rickshaw in the same case.

According to the prosecution, auto-rickshaw driver Sar Islam went outside with passengers in his vehicle on January 12 in 2014 and remained missing. Later, his family members found his auto- rickshaw with one Alam in front of Madina Rickshaw garage at Joydebpur Chowrasta on that night. They detained him and later, Alam admitted that he killed Sar Islam in Borchala area of Gazipur city. On information Joydebpur police recovered the body of Sar Islam from a government forest and sent it to Gazipur Shaheed Taj Uddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

However, deceased uncle Annis Miah filed a case with Joydebpur police station in this connection. Sub Inspector and the investigation officer of the case Mohammed Fazlul Haque submitted charge sheet against Mohammed Alam on October 01 in 2015. After examining documents and 13 witnesses, Gazipur District and Session Judge AKM Enamul Hoque handed down the verdict on Monday.

Meanwhile, UNB adds: A court in Chittagong on Sunday sentenced three people, including an ayah of Chittagong Medical College Hospital, to life imprisonment in an abduction case.

The convicts are Haradhan Nath, 58, Mohammad Abdul Aziz, 54, and ayah Shefali Begum, 45. Of them, Haradhan and Shefali were tried in absentia. The court also fined them Tk 50,000 each and in case of failure to pay the fine, they will have to suffer six more months in jail.

According to the prosecution, Haradhan took Rakib Chowdhury, 4, for an afternoon snack on January 15, 2009. However, he sold the minor boy to Shefali in front of the CMCH from where Rakib was rescued.
