Students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) yesterday protested the government’s decision of felling century-old trees in Jessore road. The students under the banner of ‘Biggan Andolan Mancha’ formed a human chain at JU Central Shaheed Minar premises protesting the issue. They demanded immediate cancellation of the decision of cutting down century-old trees on Jessore-Benapole road. Organiser of Biggan Andolan Mancha Md Dider said, “The century-old trees were witnesses to the country's Liberation War.” Moreover, if the trees are cut down it will have an adverse effect on the environment. The road-widening work could be done without cutting down the trees, he added.
Denouncing the government decision, Secretary of Socialist Student Front of the university unit, Susmita Mariam said, ‘We off course welcome the decision of widening seven feet road into four lanes. But we do not allow the decision of cutting down trees there’.
Around 100 students of different departments of the university took part at the programme.
The Roads and Highways Department (RHD) in Jessore has decided to fell 2,700 trees, many of those century-old, for the widening of Benapole- Jessore highway. Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) at its meeting on March 21, 2017 approved a project that would cost Tk 323 crore to widen a stretch of 38 kilometres road.
After the decision, there has been a strong reaction against felling age-old trees.
