Rock-bottom Cologne shock Gladbach

AFP,  BERLIN: Cologne breathed life into their faint survival hopes when new signing Simon Terodde hit a 95th-minute winner as the Bundesliga's bottom club shocked Borussia Moenchengladbach 2-1 on Sunday.

Hosts Cologne remain eight points from safety even after Terrode, who was making his club debut after signing from Stuttgart in December, reacted quickest in the box by firing home a loose ball with time almost up.

After shocking Wolfsburg last December, this is only Cologne's second league win of the season as they took the scalp of sixth-placed Gladbach. The victory comes after the club's new CEO Armin Veh - who coached Stuttgart to the 2007 Bundesliga title -- told German daily Bild "no one believes that we'll manage it" in terms of Cologne's survival chances.

Danish defender Frederik Sorensen gave Cologne a shock lead against the run of play when he headed home a free-kick by Serbia midfielder Milos Jojic on 34 minutes.

Cologne goalkeeper Timo Horn somehow managed to keep Gladbach's attack at bay as the visitors attacked in waves.

Germany midfielder Christoph Kramer and Belgian forward Thorgan Hazard went close as Gladbach created twice as many goal chances as Cologne.

The pressure paid off when the visitors drew level as Raffael snapped up a Horn save and fired home off the underside of the crossbar on 69 minutes before Terrode struck with the last gasp effort. Borussia Dortmund can jump up from fourth if they beat Wolfsburg at home on Sunday night minus star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who has been dropped for disciplinary reasons for the second time this season.

On Saturday, RB Leipzig climbed to second in the table with a 3-1 win over Schalke after Liverpool-bound Naby Keita scored their opening goal. The Guinea midfielder has a contract to join Liverpool next season, but on Sunday Leipzig put out a statement insisting he will not be joining the Merseyside club during the current transfer window, despite speculation.
