Girl found dead in Chuadanga
Chuadanga: Police recovered the body of a minor girl hanging from a tree at Chhoymile in Sadar upazila on Sunday afternoon, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Ismat Ara, 9, a Class-V student and daughter of Israfil Alam of the village.
Locals spotted the hanging body and informed them, said officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station Tozammel Haque.
Later, the law enforcers recovered the body and sent it to Chudanga Sadar Hospital for autopsy, he said, adding that the schoolgirl might have been murdered. “The reason behind the death can be known after the autopsy.”
Driver killed in road mishap
OUR CORRESPONDENT, Chapainawabganj
A driver of a battery run auto-rickshaw was killed in a road mishap at Biswa road Square in Chapainawabganj town yesterday morning.
The deceased was identified as Kamal Uddin, 24, of Tikrampur in Chapainawabganj municipality.
Police and local sources said a Sonamasjid bound truck and an auto-rickshaw collided head on in the aforesaid area around 8:30am killing the driver of the auto-rickshaw on the spot.
On information, police from Chapainawabganj sadar police station recovered the body and sent it to Chapainawabganj sadar hospital morgue for autopsy.
Although the driver of the truck fled away, police seized the truck.
Twins drown in Pabna
Pabna: A pair of minor twins drowned in a pond of Dashuria Collegepara village in Ishwardi upazila on Sunday afternoon, reports UNB.
The deceased were identified as Adib Hossain and Arafat Hossain, aged around one and half years, sons of Biplab Hossain of the village.
Azim Uddin, officer-in-charge of Ishwardi Police Station, said the two brothers were frolicking near their house in the afternoon and they fell into the pond at one stage unnoticed.
19 held, drugs seized in Dinajpur
DINAJPUR: Police, in special drives arrested 15 persons including two activists of Jamaat-e-Islami from different areas of the district in last 12-hour ending at 8am yesterday morning, reports BSS.
Law enforcers also recovered 169 bottles of Phensidyl and 218 pieces of Yaba tablets during the drives. Police said they were picked up from different areas of the district.
During the drives, Dinajpur Sadar police arrested five persons including two activists of Jamaat-e-Islami from Raniganj Moor around 11.30pm, Birganj Thana police arrested two persons, Kaharole Thana police arrested one person, Hakimpur Thana police arrested two persons, Khansama Thana police arrested two persons and Chirirbandar Thana police arrested three persons.
Several cases, including charges of subversive activities, are pending with different police stations against the arrested persons, the sources added.
On secret information Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detained two drug traders with 218 pieces of Yaba tablets from Ghoraghat Bus Stand around 10:30pm in Ghoraghat upazila. Later, the detained persons were handed over to the Ghoraghat Thana police, RAB sources said.
Meanwhile, members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in a drive detained two alleged drug traders with 169 bottles of Phensidyl around 6am from Hili railway station in Hakimpur upazila of the district.
Cake festival held in Gaibandha
GAIBANDHA: A Pitha Utsab (cake festival) was held on the premises of Central Shaheed Minar of Gaibandha Poura Park here on Sunday afternoon, reports BSS.
SKS Foundation, a reputed non government voluntary organization, arranged the festival aimed at upholding and strengthening the Bengali culture and tradition.
Mayor of Gaibandha Municipality Advocate Shah Masud Zahangir Kabir Milon formally inaugurated the festival as the chief guest and visited the 5 stalls where 30 kinds of pithas were displayed for the visitors.
Speaking on the occasion, mayor Advocate Shah Masud Zahangir Kabir Milon said Bangladesh is called the country ‘Pitha-Puli’ and the pithas are a part of food tradition and food culture of Bangladeshi cuisine.
Although the Bengalis enjoy different types of pithas all the year round but winter is the best season of pithas in our beautiful villages and our grandmothers and mothers wait to serve delicious pithas for their near and dear ones, he also said.
Apart from grandeur and colors of the pithas, the children performed songs regarding pithas to entertain the visitors during the cultural function.
Head of programmes of SKS Foundation Rajab Ali, general secretary of Zila Shilpakala Academy Promotosh Saha, programme organizer of PKSF Sumon Chowdhury Mony and senior station manager of Radio Sarabela Mahfuz Faruk and invited guest including journalists attended the programmes.
