BNP to nominate candidate Monday

Instead of finalising its candidate, BNP yesterday decided to sell nomination forms among people willing to contest the upcoming by-polls to the Dhaka North City Corporation with the party ticket, reports UNB. Party standing committee members took the decision at a meeting at the BNP chairpersons Gulshan office, said a press release. As per the BNP policymakers decision, interested people can collect the partys nomination form at Tk 10,000 from BNPs Naya Paltan central office by 4pm today. After properly filling it, the nomination seekers will have to submit the form to the BNP office with Tk 25,000 security money by 4pm tomorrow. Later, the party nomination board will interview the aspirants on Monday night at the party chairpersons Gulshan office.
However, party insiders say that the party will select its candidate on the same day, adds our Staff Correspondent. Contacted, BNP Special Secretary Asaduzzaman Ripon told this correspondent that he will buy nomination form today. Party sources dubbed Ripon and Tabith Awal, who contested the DNCC mayoral polls in 2015 as the BNP candidate, to be the partys frontrunners for nomination.
They also said that Awal is leading the race for the nomination as the BNP candidate for the upcoming mayoral by polls. As per the schedule declared by the Election Commission, the by-polls to the DNCC mayoral post will be held on February 26. The DNCC mayoral post fell vacant with the death of Annisul Huq on November 30last year.
Earlier, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia sat in the meeting with her partys standing committee members around9:40pm.
The BNP chief also had a meeting with the top leaders of her party-led 20-party alliance last week over the issue.
At the meeting, the alliance leaders assured Khaleda of extending their support to the BNP candidate she will nominate to contest the by-election.
