Detainee dies in police custody

 A 59-year-old detainee died in police custody early on Saturday in Jamalpur district. The deceased was identified as Nazim Uddin Sikdar, a resident of Shalina village in Tangail Sadar upazila. While police suspect Sikdar died due to a heart attack, his family alleged that he succumbed to custodial torture.

Police officer Salemuzzaman said Sikdar was among 12 persons arrested during a raid on an alleged gambling den at Boira Bazar in Sarishabari upazila around 2 am. The officer said the suspect complained of feeling sick after the arrest. He was taken to the Jamalpur General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. “He probably died due to a heart attack,” he said.

The deceased was an employee at the Tangail deputy commissioner’s office, his family said. His younger brother, Abdul Kadar, said Sikdar had left home for Jamalpur on Friday evening. He alleged that his brother died due to police torture. Dr KM Shafiquzzaman, residential medical officer of Jamalpur General Hospital, said police had brought Sikdar to the emergency room around 5 am.

“He might have died after a heart attack. But the cause of death can only be ascertained after the post mortem,” he added.
