Workshop on climate resillience held

An experience sharing and advocacy workshop titled “Building resilience of vulnerable communities and institutions to protect livelihoods and reduce risk from disasters and climate change in the south-west coastal areas of Bangladesh” was held at the conference room of Deputy Commissioner’s office in the city yesterday.
A Khulna based non-government organization Jagrata Juba Shangha (JJS) arranged the workshop in cooperation with Concern Worldwide to strengthen the capacity and coordination between local government institutions and local development organisations so as to prepare for and respond to disasters and climate change.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Khulna Md Mostafa Kamal addressed the workshop as chief guest. Executive Director of JJS ATM Zakir Hossain presided over the function.
Deputy Director of Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Khulna Md Abdul Latif, Additional Deputy Commissioner (general) of Khulna Md Jahangir Hossain and Chairman of Koyra Upazila Parishad AKM Tamij Uddin were present as special guests.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Koyra Syed Enamul Kabir, Assistant Engineer of Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda), Khulna Md Isahaque Ali, Koyra Sadar Union Parishad chairman SM Shafiqul Islam, among others, spoke on the occasion. Resilience project coordinator of Concern Worldwide Palash Kanti Halder delivered the address of welcome.
Chief guest Md Mostafa Kamal said that south-western part of Bangladesh is one of the disaster prone zones of the globe owing to its geographical location as well as natural reasons where storm, cyclone, tidal surge, drought, river erosion and water-logging are now common. Due to climate change the frequency and intensity of disasters are increasing, threaten lives and livelihood. A large number of people are become ultra poor due to disaster and climate change effect every year. Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) could reduce vulnerability in coastal people.
The discussants said that climate change will have a massive impact on the habitations, livelihoods, environment, irrigation, navigation, ecology, biodiversity, weather and under ground water levels. Climate change will also influence the availability of water for human consumption and for food production.
The speakers said that if we implement sustainable activity for the coastal people, especially for the women and extreme poor then the socio-economic condition will be strong and such adaptation capacity will be enhance.
