CHITTAGONG: Chittagong Special Divisional court in a verdict here yesterday awarded a customs official to eight years of imprisonment for earning wealth beyond his source of income, reports BSS.
Judge Mir Ruhul Amin delivered the verdict convicting former superintendent of customs exercise and VAT commissioner, Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar district Sheikh Akram Hossain, court sources said.
The court also acquitted his two wives Jahanara Begum and Nilupher Yasmin of separate charges which could not be proved against them.
Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) during an investigation into the wealth statement of Sheikh Akram Hossain found that he has possessed wealth nearly of TK one crore 94 lakh 43 thousand 437 through illegal means.
ACC on October 16, 2011 filed a case against Sheikh Akram Hossain on charges of possessing illegal wealth beyond the source of income.
The court framed charges against him on May 7, 2014 and delivered the verdict yesterday after examining 7 witnesses out of 10.
The court also fined him TK one crore 94 lakh 43 thousand 437, in default to suffer one year imprisonment more.
The court ordered deputy magistrate of Chittagong to realise the money from his wealth.
