Tarikul Islam Poltu, president of the ward-25 unit of BNP in Rajshahi city and also a councilor of the ward, has joined Awami League (AL) along with 30 of his loyal people.
Also an accused in a murder case, Tarikul has joined the ruling party reportedly for avoiding ‘harassment’ by law enforcers in the criminal cases. Torikul joined the party along with 30 of his loyal people at 9.30 pm at Rajshahi city AL office by handing over a bouquet to the city AL president and former mayor city Khairuzzaman Liton.
“He was accepted for his commitment for devotion to the ideologies of Bangabandhu. The charges against him, if there is any, will continue as per the process of law,” AHM Khairuzzaman Liton said defending his joining.
Poltu is a charge-sheeted accused in the murder of police constable Siddhartha Chandra Sarkar in 2013, said Mahmudur Rahman, acting Officer-in-charge of Boalia police station.
"Poltu was also accused and wanted in several other criminal cases filed for subversive activities including torching vehicles,” he added.
