Mominul Haque hit his career best 258 as Islami Bank East Zone (EZ) hurled the baton over Prime Bank South Zone on the second day of the first round of Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL) yesterday at BKSP.

Mominul’s second first class double century was complemented by youngster Zakir Hasan’s 119 as East Zone was wrapped up for 546 but  kept them ahead of 418 runs at the close of day two, following South Zone’s 128 for three.

They could now eye to have a massive lead even though Mosaddek Hossain Saikat, another national team aspirant, led a fightback, batting on 42. Tushar Imran was the other unbeaten batsman of South Zone with 22.

Mominul added 89 runs to his overnight 169 after East Zone resumed the day on 340 for five. Zakir Hossain too excelled with his senior mate after resuming the day on 47 and went to register his century. Zakir clobbered six fours and four sixes in the knock lasted for 169 balls. Mominul struck 23 fours and three sixes in 344 balls.

The duo added 233 runs for the sixth wicket stand, laying the platform of a big total. But after the partnership was broken with the dismissal of Zakir, East Zone could add just 86 runs for the rest of the four wickets.

Abdur Razzak, the captain of South Zone was the most successful bowler with six for 178 runs, delivering 40.5 overs. Razzak’s fellow left arm spinner Saqlain Sajib claimed three for 93.

If South Zone still is in the chance to fight neck-to-neck with East Zone, BCB North Zone took a complete control over Walton Central Zone, making it a one-sided affair at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.

Jahurul Islam Omee hit an unbeaten 152 as North Zone ended the second day on 433 for seven, stretching their lead to whopping 245. Omee would fancy his chance to make it a double century on day three but for Dhiman Ghosh the day brought up a huge frustration even though his side is in the massive lead.

Dhiman was dismissed for 93 when he had the chance to convert it to a century. He however struck a dozen of boundaries.

Omee was in complete control during his knock as he defied the Central Zone attack in surgical fashion. In a knock, in which he faced 232 balls so far, he smashed 14 fours and five sixes, much to the disappointment of the opponents.

The platform was set by the openers Nazmul Hossain Shanto and Mizanur Rahman who combined for a 102 runs partnership after resuming the day with overnight 93 for no loss. Even though the partnership couldn’t last long enough at the start of the day and Central Zone bowlers hit back with quick wickets, Jahurul kept them at bay finally to establish his side’s complete control.

Taskin Ahmed bagged three but conceded 116 runs in 26 overs while Shuvagata Hom and Mosharraf Hossain picked up two wicket apiece.
