Robbers abduct 18 fishermen
NOAKHALI: Robbers abducted 18 fishermen from Sangu Gas Field area yesterday morning and demanded a ransom of Tk 3 lakh, reports BSS.
President of Hatiya Fishing Boat Owners Association Rashed Miah said 18 fishermen went out for fishing in the deep sea from Surjamukhi Ghat on Monday night.
Robbers attacked and held them at about 4am when they were returning to Hatiya with their catch.
After assaulting the fishermen they demanded Tk 3 lakh, through cell phone, from their boat owners.
Lieutenant Tanvir Ahmed, station commander of Hatiya Coast Guard, said they have received the information when they were patrolling near Nijhum Dwip of Hatiya.
At about 3 pm they were informed that the sea robbers have anchored at Kutubdia along with the abducted fishermen, he added.
He also said they have informed the incidence to the Moheshkhali and Kutubdia Coast Guard.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Hatiya police station Nurul Huda said he has received the news but the place of occurrence is not under his jurisdiction.
The abducted fishermen are from Hatiya upazila, the OC added.
26 BNP men land in jail
Sirajganj: A court here on Monday sent 26 BNP leaders and activists to jail in a case filed for subversive activities, reports UNB.
Sirajganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Sadia Sultana passed the order rejecting their bail petitions when they surrendered before the court seeking bail.
A case was filed against them in connection with the subversive activities in Enayetpur thana area of Chouhali upazila.
Fugitive murder convict held
Laxmipur: Detective Branch (DB) of Police arrested a fugitive murder convict from Lamchhari area in sadar upazila on Monday night, reports UNB.
Additional superintendent of police Muhammad Shariful Islam said the arrestee, Taiyab Alam, a resident of Shibpur village in Ramganj upazila of the district, was sentenced to death in absentia for killing a microbus driver Jabed Hossain on May 31, 2000.
Tipped off, a team of DB police conducted a raid on the house of Taiyab’s father-in-law in the area and arrested him at night, the ASP added.
